Littlestone Golf Club
Championship Links Golf on the Remote Romney Marsh
Littlestone Golf Club stands as one of England’s hidden gems, a classic championship links course laid out on the naturally undulating terrain of Romney Marsh with the English Channel as its dramatic backdrop. Founded in 1888 and shaped by legendary architects including Laidlaw Purves, James Braid, and Alister MacKenzie, this atmospheric course has hosted Open Qualifying five times and ranks among the Top 100 courses in England.
Historic Championship Links Heritage
Littlestone’s distinguished history includes hosting the British Ladies’ Open just six years after opening, establishing its championship credentials early. The course design evolved through contributions from golfing legends: original architect Laidlaw Purves, modifications by James Braid in the early 1900s, and significant revisions by Alister MacKenzie in the 1920s. Frank Pennink added bunker modifications post-WWII, with Donald Steel and Peter Alliss providing modern refinements in 2000.
Classic Links Design Excellence
- Championship Course: 18-hole par-71 links stretching 6,632 yards across flat links terrain
- Signature Features: True fast greens, strategic bunkering, and challenging closing trio of holes
- Natural Conditions: One of the driest places in Britain with excellent year-round conditions
- The Warren Course: Additional 18-hole par-69 course (5,179 yards) for varied golf experiences
- Strategic Challenge: Clear views from tees but demanding approach shots to well-protected greens
Exceptional Course Conditions
Located in one of the driest places in the British Isles, Littlestone enjoys superb year-round conditions with no temporary greens or tees required. The free-draining links terrain provides excellent lies, while the fast, true greens present a constant challenge. The course’s north-south axis creates strategic interest, with the front nine typically playing downwind and the back nine into the prevailing south-westerly breeze.
Premier Practice & Clubhouse Facilities
The club features comprehensive practice facilities including a driving range, putting greens, practice bunkers, and short game areas. The traditional clubhouse offers dining with panoramic views, while the pro shop provides equipment and professional services. Recent renovations ensure modern amenities while maintaining the club’s historic character and warm hospitality traditions.
